About Alex Haynes
Alex Haynes, M.D., M.P.H. is Associate Program Director of Safe Surgery at Ariadne Labs.
He is a practicing surgical oncologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital and faculty at both Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. His academic work focuses on the implementation of quality improvement initiatives and improving healthcare delivery through reducing unintended variability while enhancing communication and coordination of care. He currently leads a project in collaboration with Raffaella Sadun, PhD of the Harvard Business School examining variation in management practices within hospitals and the effect of these practices on quality of clinical care. Previously, he led a multi-institutional study of a checklist-based intervention to reduce complications and death following surgery in eight countries as part of the World Health Organization’s “Safe Surgery Saves Lives” campaign. He has published in numerous high-impact journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, Health Affairs, and Cancer.
Dr. Haynes received his B.A. from Tulane University, his M.P.H. from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and his M.D. from Wayne State University School of Medicine. His clinical training includes residency in surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
